Six Types of Medication

Medication is a type of medicine or drug that is dispensed or prescribed to manage a particular condition, illness or set of symptoms.

They must be handled correctly and safely to prevent harm to a patient.

Medication is usually dispensed by a pharmacist, following a prescription from a doctor or other prescriber. It can come in various different forms.

Types

Liquid medications can also be known as mixtures, solutions and syrups. The active ingredient is suspended within the liquid, making it easier to take and absorb.

Tablets are solid and often round or oval-shaped. Some tablets may require that the patient swallows them whole with water, or some may be dissolved in water or another liquid for ease of swallowing.

Capsules are like a tablet only the active ingredient is contained within a plastic shell. This then breaks down inside the stomach so that the ingredients can be absorbed.

Topical medications are applied directly to the skin. They may be creams, ointments or lotions.

Drops are medications that are usually used for difficult to reach areas, such as where a medication needs to be in direct contact with the eyes, ear or nasal passage.

Inhalers are used in the treatment of various lung and breathing conditions such as asthma. These deliver a direct and pressurised dose directly into the lungs and respiratory system.

Safe Handling of Medication

Healthcare providers must be committed to minimising harm and risk to patients whilst enhancing the overall patient experience and prioritising quality care. There is a wealth of legislation and regulation around the safe handling of medications, including the Medicines Act 1968.

Anyone who is regularly responsible for the handling of patient medication should ensure that they are fully trained regarding the responsibilities that come alongside their role. This includes issues surrounding consent, capacity, storage and legislation.

Training packages for health and care workers can be custom-designed to incorporate individual organisations’ own policies and procedures.
