The earliest examples of knitting through history

Knitting has been practised for centuries across the entire world, whether done by hand or with sticks, bones, and ivory fashioned as knitting needles. Items such as Egyptian socks dating as far back as the 3rd to 5th century AD exist in museums today.
Origins

Knitting is believed to have originated in the Middle East, expanding across Europe from the 5th century onwards, when wool traders travelled overseas. Earlier pieces are crafted from thread, as opposed to wool, and are emblazoned with Arabic blessings and symbols.

Early pieces crafted from double knitting can be traced back to North African regions from around 1100-1300. The designs of these pieces often mirrored the architecture present during this period of Islamic rule.

After knitting spread across Europe during later periods, England began manufacturing knitwear such as flat caps. It became enshrined in English law that all persons above the age of 6 should wear a knitted cap on Sundays and holidays. The passing of the law helped to secure jobs in manufacturing, by keeping the demand sufficiently high.

Crochet

Crochet is another ancient form of knitting, using a single tool rather than the traditional paired needles. It allows for the production of intricately-formed and delicate items, ranging from blankets and scarves to home accessories. The oldest form of crochet is known as shepherd’s knitting, or slip-stitch crochet.
