How to make a great hand-crafted blanket

The sudden increase in fuel costs has hit many of us and continues to do so. Household budgets have been put under tremendous strain with the cost of heating and the average home rising to £4000. This equates to about three hundred and thirty-three pounds a month as a typical bill. The Government’s help, setting the average price to pay at two thousand five hundred pounds, the exception being that if you use over that you will be charged for what you’ve consumed, is being reviewed in April. This basically means it’s going to be withdrawn and will only be available to those that need it at a local level. With more and more of us delaying putting on the central heating, electric heaters,  tumble dryers or washing machines, plus reviewing the food we eat that requires keeping the oven on for long periods at a time, we are all keen on ways to keep energy usage down. With this in mind, why not get some Knitting Kits, like that from www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/knitting-kits. Some of these kits include hand-crafted blankets. There is nothing more snuggly and warming than having a good blanket to get underneath. It traps your, and others, body heat and helps to keep you warm without costing the earth.

How do you make a good one? There are no-sew options but most agreed that the best approach is to knit, quilt or crochet one together for maximum warmth retention. They also look awesome and can be a real centrepiece in the living room. Best of all, you can feel safe in the knowledge that you made it when one of your friends and family asks where you got it from.

The fleece and faux fur blanket combination is by far the most warming. Fleece is a nice material to use as it can be very unforgiving to the new sewer. You will need to have a sewing machine to put it all together. Hand stitching the blanket can take ages and the machine will take some of the strain.

However, for the expert, a grand project like a blanket is a full-on task of the knitter. Chunky and cashmere wool will make a brilliant blanket to keep out the chill. Even better, the process of knitting a blanket is one of the simplest that you can get. This means that if you’re thinking of introducing your children to knitting then a combined effort on a blanket is a great way to start.
