Ways to support someone who experiences anxiety

There are many reasons that people can experience anxiety, and it can be hard to predict when an anxiety attack may occur. It is so commonplace that it is important that businesses ensure that they have staff members undertake Mental Health Training Courses like the ones from www.tidaltraining.co.uk/mental-health-courses to enable them to identify ways they can support colleagues who are coping with anxiety.

There are a number of ways that we can all support someone who experiences anxiety.

Listen – one of the best ways to support someone with anxiety is to listen to them. Not only does this mean listening to how they are feeling but listening to what they have to say with regards to ways in which they would like to be supported. No two people will experience anxiety the same way.  Some people may want to be left alone when they feel anxious, and others may want to be surrounded by people. The only way to know which one it is is to ask.

Stay calm – as hard as it can be to stay calm around someone who is experiencing an anxiety attack. It is important that you focus on the individual and what they need at that moment. It is equally important to ensure that you look after yourself and your own well-being, and this may mean talking to someone else. Counsellors for example have supervision with another qualified professional so they can discuss any issues that may have arisen with their clients.
