How the dimensions of a van are measured

Whether you are moving house, planning a tip run or buying bulky materials, when you book van rental in Bristol or elsewhere, you will need to choose a van that is the right size. Too big and it may be hard to park and too small will result in extra journeys. There is also a cost differential to consider, with larger vans typically commanding a more expensive hire rate.

Length

L codes 1 to 4 are used to indicate how long a van is, although these measurements will vary between manufacturers. Typically, the lower the number after the L, the shorter the length of the vehicle.

Height

H codes likewise depict the height of the vehicle, with H1 being a standard height roof while H3 is a super-high roof. Again, the physical heights of each vehicle will differ depending on the manufacturer.

If you need a vehicle that is tall enough to stand in, you will need a High Top vehicle. Usually, H2 and H3 vans are considered to be High Top as their elevated heights allow greater headroom.

Width

Vans often list two width measurements – one for the internal width and one for the external width. The internal width is a valuable measurement tool for those wishing to transport bulky loads, as it will determine the maximum width of the articles that it can accommodate.

The external width is equally important, however, as if you will need to navigate via a road with a width restriction, you will want to be sure that the van that you have hired will fit before you set off.

Summary

Whether for short or long term hire, there will be an appropriate van to suit your needs. Take the time to consider what the van will be used for and the roads that you will use it on to ensure that you select the best van for the job.
