Improve soil quality with these tips

Good garden soil is the key to a lush garden full of healthy plants. It is an ongoing process. It can take years to achieve good soil. There is no shortcut. If you can get your soil just right, it will reward you with plants that are strong and vigorous, resistant to pests and disease, and which produce in abundance. Your ‘green fingered’ status will increase.

Although it may be obvious, let’s begin by stating that plants won’t grow as well when planted over large stones.

Two solutions exist for stony soil. You can either dig out the larger stones and remove as many small stones as you can before planting or build raised beds with topsoil and compost to raise the plants above the stones.

When people first move to a new home, and start digging the garden, it is common for them to find all kinds of debris and stones buried beneath a thin topsoil layer. It is only possible to remove the subsoil, debris, and add a mixture of topsoil with compost.

Improve clay soil

Another soil that can be problematic is heavy clay. Add organic matter to a clay-heavy soil. Manure that has been well rotted is a good example. This will break down clay particles if you do it every year.

The manure is well-rotted if it has been left to decay for a minimum of six months. Manure can be purchased at a DIY or garden centre, or you can ask the stable near you if they have any horse manure. It is the cheapest way to obtain good quality manure. Make sure it has rotted well, and leave it out in the garden for a while until the smell of “horse” is gone.
