What are the symptoms of anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that can become life-threatening very quickly. It can happen within minutes after coming into contact with something you are allergic to, like foods, medicines or insect stings. During anaphylaxis, the body releases chemicals that can cause your blood pressure to drop and your airways to narrow which makes it hard to breathe.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Symptoms of anaphylaxis usually appear quickly, but they can start later. You might have trouble breathing, your throat or tongue may swell or have difficulty swallowing. You might also have a fast or weak pulse, feel dizzy or faint or your skin might become itchy or blotchy. Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea can also occur. These signs show that the body is in shock and needs urgent help

What to do in an Emergency

If someone shows symptoms of anaphylaxis, it is a medical emergency. Using an adrenaline auto-injector right away can save a life. Even if the symptoms improve after the injection, it is important to go to the hospital because reactions can return. This is why emergency first aid training courses are important for everyone, so you know exactly what to do in these situations. If you’re looking to complete emergency first aid training courses, there are plenty of organisations that can help.

Seeing a Doctor Afterwards

After a severe allergic reaction, you should go to the doctors as they can help identify what caused the reaction and give advice on preventing it in the future. Early treatment and knowing the signs can help you stay safe.
