Electric Steering Rack Repair Options
So who wants to spend a fortune to replace an electric steering rack when there are so many alternative repair options open to you.
Get a Diagnostic Check First
To establish the most cost effective way to repair your Electric Power Steering Rack (EPS) first of all obtain the fault codes from the vehicles ECU. This should be done by a competent individual or a garage equipped with the necessary diagnostic equipment to read the vehicle’s ECU. This is because the ECU for an Electric Power Steering Rack is integrated into the rack itself, and as such the failure could be with the electrical components rather than the rack itself.
Consider a Specialist Electronic Repair
An electrical fault with the motor, control module or steering angle sensors can be repaired by a specialist for a cost of around £100 to £200. Please note that not all faults can be repaired and lead times for repair may vary.
Exchange Reconditioned Units
An exchange reconditioned steering rack is similar to a purchased reconditioned steering rack in that a supplier will send you a reconditioned rack for exchange of your faulty rack for core return. The reconditioned rack will come with a six to twelve month guarantee and is generally priced lower than a new rack. As with all reconditioned steering racks the steering angle sensor will need to be calibrated after fitting the new rack and a wheel alignment check will also be required.
New OEM or Aftermarket Replacement
A new steering rack is the most reliable way to repair your car but also the most expensive. Prices for new steering racks can range from around £400 fitted for an original-equipment part to around £800 for some models and higher for others. Aftermarket parts are available and are generally cheaper but there is a big difference in quality between different manufacturers. Check the warranty offered for any part before you purchase it and make sure you get the steering angle sensor calibrated and the wheels aligned after the repair.
Know Your Consumer Rights
Remember that as with any repair your statutory rights will apply, this includes guarantee on any parts and labour. It is best to read up on your rights when paying for a repair to make sure you are getting the best deal.
Knowing your options helps you compare like with like when getting quotes for a repair from garages. You can then decide what’s best for you.
