Can anyone drive a forklift truck?

Forklift trucks are specially designed vehicles for lifting and transporting heavy goods. They have two metal prongs (the forks) at the front, which slide under the boxes/pallets in order to lift them. They are able to lift and move significant weights.

Forklifts are used in various industries, including manufacturing, warehousing and construction.

Who can drive a forklift truck?

In terms of legal requirements, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations state that all employers must make sure that any employees who manage or use any equipment have received sufficient training. This training must cover correct usage, risk awareness/assessment, and safety precautions.
It is a common misconception that a licence is required in order to drive a forklift. The actual requirement is the need to pass an accredited training course (which results in a certificate). Forklift training can be carried out at specialist centres, or even at a business’ own premises.

Is learning to drive a forklift difficult?

Learning to drive a forklift is not regarded as being overly difficult. There are theoretical and practical elements but most people would be able to master these – as long as they have proper training, a good instructor and sufficient chance to practise. It is, perhaps, comparable to learning how to ride a bike.

What experience/background is useful?

Whilst it is not a mandatory requirement (and no driving licence is required), previous experience with driving or using machines/vehicles can give you a head start in forklift training.

What skills and physical or mental attributes are needed?

In order to undertake forklift training/use a forklift, drivers must usually be aged 18 or over. They must have unimpaired vision (glasses or contacts are allowed), sufficient hearing levels to be able to hear instructions and any warning signals/alarms, and have full movement of their body, neck and limbs.
