What size images should I use?

Providing your images in an optimal upload-ready format can save you a lot of time during the development process and ensure the visual result that you desire. If you plan to upload image content yourself, it’s important to keep this in mind.

What the image will be used for is important, but even more so, where. Is it for a banner, thumbnail, cover image or perhaps an icon? If you’re using an Iphone to take the image, it might work well in some places, but not as a large feature image.

As a general rule, you should always send your team the highest-resolution images possible so they can resize them appropriately before uploading. You’ll at least want to make sure they are the exact size they will appear on your website. If you make them smaller, they will be too blurry and pixelated to use.

Can my images affect the speed at which my website loads?

In general, the bigger the size of an image, the better the display. Uploading large files can negatively impact the loading speed of your website. Your users will lose patience and may abandon your website. For advice on Web Design Swansea, visit https://www.accent-adc.co.uk/service/web-design-swansea/

How do I save images?

The answer is, if you are delivering images, make sure they are either saved as .jpg files (for photos) and .png files (for graphics). Also, remember that these are not compatible with the web:

  • .pdf
  • .pds
  • .tff
  • .doc

Search engines can determine the subject of an image by using its name as alt text. This will increase its chances to appear in search results.

Stick to simple letters, underscores, hyphens, and numbers. Avoid using question marks and percentage signs as they can cause galleries to behave in an unexpected way or upload incorrectly.

For example: if your image name is IMG_00345.jpg, change it to something descriptive such as red-cotton-jumper-01.

Should I take into consideration things like aspect ratio and orientation?

It is possible to predict the cropping of your images by providing images that have a constant aspect ratio. You can do the same by rotating the images to the correct orientation for the website.

Why has my image been cropped?

Answer: You’ll probably need to crop some images on your site to fit into the available space. This is especially relevant for your mobile design. A large banner image in your desktop design might be reduced to half its original size to fit the mobile screen.
