Are cognitive decline and hearing loss linked?

For quite some time, it has been suspected that there is a link between a person experiencing hearing loss and cognitive decline. However, it was only as recently as 2011 that a major study took place which lent considerably more weight to the argument that there is indeed a link between the two. In fact, the study even found that the greater the degree of hearing loss, the greater the risk of developing dementia in later life.

This important study, which included 639 adults, has formed the basis for much more scientific research into this potential connection according to Jama Network.

What else has been discovered?

A further study called ACHIEVE, led by Dr. Frank Lin, completed a follow up piece of research which tracked the progress of two sets of older adults, all of whom had untreated hearing loss but were otherwise healthy. Half received treatment such as hearing aids for this, and half did not. Astonishingly, it was proven that receiving hearing care resulted in a 48% reduction in the rate of cognitive decline in the respective group compared with the other.

What can we do about this?

Hearing loss is considered a variable factor in the list of risks of developing dementia. That is to say, hearing loss can very often be successfully managed, using devices such as hearing aids, for example. Treating hearing loss is therefore an excellent way of lowering a person’s risk of cognitive decline and even dementia.

It is wise to get a hearing test booked if you or a relative experience any sign of difficulty with your hearing, such as struggling to hear the television, difficulty following conversations or experiencing a buzzing or ringing in the ears. An audiologist Cheltenham or your nearest location, such as https://www.imperialhearing.com/audiologist-near-me/cheltenham/, can check your hearing and the health of your ears as well as provide a treatment plan if necessary.

These studies give researchers an excellent basis for further studies into the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline.
